CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY
The department of Chemical Pathology was without a formal administrative structure at inception, as there was no consultant Chemical Pathologist on ground. The department was headed by a Medical Laboratory Scientist. In April 2013, Dr. Fayeofori Abbiyesuku was appointed the pioneer consultant, head of department and has been heading the department from then till March, 2020 when Dr. Modupe Akinrele Kuti took over from him till date. In December, 2014, Dr. Adeyemi Dada was employed as a second Consultant Chemical Pathologist, subsequently, in May 2015; Dr. Chinelo Onyenekwu joined the department as the third Consultant. However, Dr. Dada left the department in April 2017 to return to practice in Lagos for reasons of proximity to family. Within the same month, Dr. Oluwatobi Eluyera joined the Department as a consultant replacing Dr. Dada and was joined by Dr. Oyebola Sonuga who both left the department September, 2019 and replaced by Dr. Modupe A. Kuti in February 2020.
Dr. O.T Bamidele and Dr. O.T Olayanju joined the department in December 2020 and January 2021 respectively and have stabilized the departmental activities since arrival. There are currently two resident doctors in the department. Dr. E.B Nwaka joined the department after a successful attempt at primary Examination while Dr. O. E Olasehinde became a senior registrar in October, 2021 after a successful membership examination at the West African College of Physicians.
In addition, since inception and till date, the management of Babcock University Teaching Hospital has recruited six Medical Laboratory Scientist, One of whom has risen to the rank of a Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist.
ACTIVITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY
- The clinical duties of the Department Include:
- To ensure that the results issued by the laboratory are appropriate to the patients’ pathological condition.
- To provide interpretative comments on the Laboratory reports when appropriate.
- To suggest further appropriate investigations.
- To help in monitoring and control therapy of individual patients when requested.
- Offering of a wide range for services for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of metabolic disorders, inborn errors of metabolism
- To organize and conduct, in conjunction with other specialists, dynamic function tests.
Other functions of the Department

- Urine testing for Drugs of abuse (Psychosocial Screening).
- Testing of staff and students during annual screening exercises.
- Training of undergraduate medical students, Resident Doctors from internal medicine and family medicine and provision of practical experience to intern Medical Laboratory Scientists.
- Provision of Training of students on Industrial attachment from various higher Institutions of learning throughout the country.
- Conduction of scientific research and operational research/ audits.
