Where it all started
The roots of Babcock University Teaching Hospital trace back to its humble beginnings as a Primary Health Centre managed by Nurse Mrs. Sofficool in 1973, during the era of the Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA). Initially, the center exclusively served seminarian students of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Community Expansion
In 1975, under the leadership of Mrs. Vertibelle Awoniyi, the center expanded its services to the broader Ilishan-Remo community. This transition marked the hospital’s commitment to providing healthcare beyond the seminarian community.
Transition to a Clinic
As part of our growth journey, we relocated to our current location within BUTH, evolving into a 15-bed clinic equipped with laboratory services, a power house, and outpatient facilities. Our medical staff expanded to include doctors and nurses, broadening the scope of services provided.
Towards University Status
In 1999, ASWA gained recognition as a university from the Federal Government of Nigeria, and our institution was renamed Babcock University Medical Centre, achieving Secondary Healthcare status.
Decade of Development
The early 2000s witnessed the arrival of more medical professionals, including consultants. Notable additions to our team included Drs. John Sotunsa, Ibironke Awodele, John Odiase, and Dokun, alongside consultant physicians Dr. Olusoji Jagun (Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Dr. Awodein (Ophthalmology). This period also saw an expansion in our workforce.
Becoming a Teaching Hospital
In 2011, Babcock University established a Medical School, leading to our expansion from a 15-bed Health Centre to a 45-bed hospital. Subsequently, a 140-bed building was added, meeting the minimum requirements for a Teaching Hospital. In 2012, we officially became a Teaching Hospital under the leadership of Professor Franklin Ani as the Chief Medical Director and Dr. John Sotunsa as the Director of Clinical Services.
Achieving Accreditation
Our hospital gained full accreditation for all major disciplines in Medicine, including Surgery, Family Medicine, Radiology, Pediatrics, Community Medicine, Medicine, and Laboratory Medicine.
Center of Excellence in Cardiovascular Surgery and Intervention
In 2015, we established the Center of Excellence for Cardiovascular Surgery and Intervention Cardiac Surgery, a significant milestone in our healthcare journey.
Pioneering Medical Advancements
Our Radiology Unit boasts advanced imaging techniques, including MRI, CT scan, Mammography, Ultrasound Services, and Fluoroscopy. Moreover, we’ve become a center for molecular biopsy studies, contributing to high-technology medical services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
